Traveling on a Budget: Cape Town, Bangkok, and Athens!

Hello friends! We all love traveling, but do we all have the money to?! The answer is YES! Today I am going to go through some rad travel destinations and things you can do at these places for relatively cheap or even FREE! Let’s jump right in!

Cape Town

Cape Town is an iconic city in South Africa with both mountain terrain and oceans, which offer a wide opportunity for free recreation. District Six is an incredible place to walk around and explore! It was once a community of freed slaves, artisans, and laborers; therefore, the culture of the city really shines amongst these streets. Be sure to hit the District Six Museum that runs Sunset Walking Tours in the spring and summer! Speaking of museums, the Cape Diamond Museum is one you will want to hit as well, as Cape Town has been synonymous with diamonds since the 1840s. If you download a voucher from shimansky.com, you can get on the tour for free! St. George’s Cathedral is a historical spot you won’t want to miss & can also check out for free!

Cape Town is known for its glorious beaches! Camps Bay is a cool city option, while Llandudno is for surfers. Muizenberg and St James beaches are family friendly, and again all are free! Two other places you must visit are Bo-Kaap and Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Bo-Kaap, on the side of Signal Hill, is renowned for its entertainment scene, mosques, and cuisine! There’s no fee to walk around and I’m sure you can scope out a cool local joint with affordable food. Then, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is absolutely stunning! It’s a former wharf transformed into a waterfront shopping, dinning and entertainment area. There are always free events happening at the waterfront so plan ahead and schedule to be there when there is an event going on that interests you!

Bangkok

Bangkok is definitely one of the best places to visit on a budget; there is so much you can see and do for free! Baan Silapin Artist’s House is a historic wooden house that puts on a puppeteer show every afternoon that brings to life the legends of Thailand. The Bangkokian Museum is a hidden gem in the city where many treasures lie on display. Golden Mount, just East of Democracy Monument, is mountain top viewpoint with some of the best views of the city! Ko Kret Island is a unique little village with streets to room and artisans about where you can find a local market on the weekends! The best part about all of these activities, they are free!!

The free activities don’t end there! Visit Lumphini Park to practice some t’ai-chi in the am. The Pak Khlong Talat Flower Market can hook you up with some of the most beautiful flowers in the world, or at the very least, the most fragrant spot in the city. There are even free meditation classes! Near Wat Mahathat, there are 3-hour donation meditation classes where you can find a spot to get some inner peace. My best recommendation is to visit the Chatuchak Weekend Market, where you can find antiques, artistry chopsticks, Thai silks, & much more! Chinatown has street eats like no other, the Rot Fai Market will have all your automobile antique needs, & the Chao Phraya Express Ferry will give you some of the best views as you cruise on the river in Bangkok!

Athens

From street murals to historic wonders, Athens charm is sure to please. The Embros Theatre is a multipurpose artistic hub where you will find Latin dancing, Cuban salsa, or see an exhibition! Kavouri Beach offers million dollars views for no price at all. It is about a 30-minute drive out of the city but works as an awesome place to dive in for a swim! Lykavittos Hill is the highest point in Athens and offers a bird’s eye view of the city. Get specular views of the Acropolis for no fee whatsoever! National Gardens is another rad spot to chill, soak up the greenery, and maybe even have a little picnic! Last but certainly not least, check out the Parliament Building. Every hour on the hour, you can watch the changing of the guards of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This city is sure to surprise you with its free activities, whether its just roaming the historic streets or jumping in on the city wide bike tour every Friday night!

I love sharing all the free & fun activities there are in so many cities around the world! If you guys like hearing about the spots to see, I’d love to sure about more travel destinations in the future! The gemstone recommendation for this week has to be Citrine. Citrine is said to bring positivity to your passions in life. My biggest passion is without a doubt traveling!! Citrine helps me travel safely, affordably, and brings positivity + abundance to my travels!
